The paper presents simple relationships existing between the stellar brightness and equivalent width of emission lines when stellar variability is caused either by the photosphere or by the extinction of the circumstellar dust cloud. These relationships are used to derive the sources of variability for one unique variable V348 Sgr and two T Tauri stars: CO Ori and RW Aur.
