From mass spectrometer data of molecular ions and water cluster ions in the D-region published in the literature, qualitative characteristics of the height distribution of water vapor mixing ratio near the midlatitude mesopause are derived using a simplified ion chemistry scheme. It turns out that the observed sharp transition between the cluster-dominated and the molecular ion-dominated height regions can be understood only if a steep decrease of water vapor mixing ratio with height is assumed.
