Determination of the response of MF and HF radio wave absorption in the ionosphere to changes in the solar zenith angle, sounding frequency, geomagnetic field, solar activity and seasonal characteristics of photochemistry and transport from measurements at low latitudes covering a period of nearly three and a half decades, is reviewed. The effects of solar eclipse, lunar tide and planetary scale wave forcing are also considered. The response of absorption to geomagnetic field and electron density perturbations is briefly discussed.
