Features of convective processes in the auroral oval are identified on the basis of recent analyses of 2.5 million convective velocity observations over a period of 8 yr. A local time dependence is noted for the spatial relationship between the convection electric field and auroral precipitation. The overall potential pattern becomes skewed relative to the precipitation pattern as the magnitude of the precipitation index grows. It is shown that the electric field magnitude peaks 5 deg poleward of the Hall conductant at 04 magnetic local time (MLT) and dominates the poleward segment of the westward electrojet current in the morning sector. By 20 MLT the electric field and conductance profiles, which have an equivalent peak latitude and extent, provide a center for the eastward electrojet current.
