Whereas it is normally assumed that nucleation of primocrysts in mafic intrusions occurs at the top of the magma chamber, where heat losses are greatest, some authors have postulated nucleation of primocrysts near the base. It is considered that the water content of the magma and the vertical height of the magma chamber are the most important factors in controlling the site of initial nucleation; various hypothetical situations, including that of water concentration gradients through the magma column, are discussed with special reference to the profile of the basalt liquidus on a P-T diagram.
