High resolution observations of the last decade made it clear that the magnetic field is, without doubt, one of the most important quantities of the solar atmosphere. Magnetic field controls the dynamics, stability and thermal state of the plasma. At the same time, magnetic field is connecting the solar interior to the atmosphere and all dynamic events in the upper layers of the Sun have their instigator on the solar surface or the region underneath. In this contribution I will review some properties of magnetic field generation and expansion into the solar atmosphere. Some direct and indirect diagnostic techniques will be discussed with special emphasis on indirect methods which involve the properties of waves and oscillations used to give values for the magnetic field in the solar coronal structures and quiet Sun.
