The interaction of the incoming solar wind protons with particles reflected at the bow shock was studied with HEOS-1 plasma and magnetic field data: the proton bulk speed was found to decrease by 30 km/sec in the region where upstream waves are observed (knowing region). The wave amplitude was found to increase with increasing bulk speed and to decrease with increasing proton number density.
