We study the (maximum entropy) variational problem associated with the violent relaxation process in stellar dynamics. We prove that for confined systems, in the general case (not necessarily radially symmetric), this problem always has a solution. Thus the gravitational collapse, which occurs for classical systems, does not occur in the case of violent relaxation.
