An alternative analysis of the geomagnetic field which can account for magnetic reversals but which does not require a self-reversing dynamo is described. The analysis is based on the assumption of two separate sources for the geomagnetic field. It avoids the complexities inherent in a self-reversing dynamo theory. Systematic asymmetries between the two polarity states and a technique of treating present field data demonstrate the probability of the two-source analysis. The inner and outer cores of the earth would account for the two sources. A mechanism for solid inner core magnetic field generation must come not from a magnetohydrodynamic system, but from solid-state physics.
