The applicability of the bromine method for the temperature determination in primary potash deposits of the MgSO 4 -free type was tested in the Oligocene salts of the upper Rhine valley. An important criterion for the recognition of undisturbed primary bromine contents is the proportion of the bromine contents in halite and sylvite of the same rock, which must amount to 1:10 ± 1. Smaller contents of bromine in halite with respect to the paragenetic proportion probably indicate the crystallization of halite from a KCl-unsaturated solution, which overlies a KCl-saturated solution. Higher contents of bromine in halite with respect to the paragenetic proportion probably indicate diagenetic recrystallisation of sylvite in ascending pore solutions. Three sylvite beds immediately below the worked part of the lower potash seam proved to be suitable for temperature estimation. The average values found range from about 10°C (or a few degrees less) to 51 ± 5°C. But there exist distinct vertical and horizontal gradients. The lowest temperatures without exception were found for the lowermost bed. The highest temperatures were found for the highest of the three beds and at the deepest part of the individual basin. Very few determinations from carnallite samples gave temperatures of 45 ± 5°C.
