A review of Zernike polynomials is presented, with special emphasis on nomenclature. Some new properties of Zernike polynomials such as integral representations and derivatives are discussed. The work of Fried is extended by developing a Zernike representation of the Kolmogorov spectrum of turbulence, which permits analytical calculation of all the statistical aberration strengths. It is found that the Zernike polynomials are suitable for analytical evaluation of the residual wave-front error for any number of independent errors.
