There are some 30 white dwarfs which are known to be magnetic with
fields in the range 106-109 Gauss. A somewhat smaller number are found
in the close interacting binary systems known as the AM Herculis
variables. We discuss how Zeeman and cyclotron spectroscopy have been
used to determine fields and study fields structure in these stars.
