Evidence for the action of gravitational waves in the mass exchange mechanism of the ultrashort-period eclipsing cataclysmic binary Z Cha is presented. The physical properties of the system are determined from the spectroscopic data of Vogt (1979) and the photometric data of Fabian et al. (1979). A white dwarf primary mass of 0.35 + or 0.06 solar masses, and radius of 0.018 + or - 0.002 solar radii, a Roche-filling secondary mass of 0.16 + or - 0.02 solar masses and radius of 0.19 + or - 0.8 deg are obtained for the system, consistent with the M-R relation for white dwarfs and a low mass main sequence secondary. A mass exchange rate of 4 x 10 to the -11th solar masses/year is estimated from the luminosities of the hot spot and accretion disk. Considerations of the possible mechanisms of mass exchange in light of the natures of the stars lead to the conclusion that classical mechanisms of mass exchange are insufficient, while mass exchange as a consequence of angular momentum loss due to gravitational radiation is shown to be able to account for the magnitude of the observed exchange.
