It is pointed out that there are two basic ingredients which lead to an understanding of young supernova remnants. The first is the nature of the expanding supernova material which was originally a part of the progenitor star. The second ingredient is the nature of the environment into which the supernova is expanding. The interaction of the supernova with its environment leads to a rich set of phenomena, which can be observed at radio, optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray wavelengths. The present investigation is concerned with a review of these phenomena, giving particular attention to the interpretation of recent observations of young supernova remnants. A description of supernova environments is provided, and details regarding the initial interaction with the circumstellar medium are explored. Young galactic remnants are discussed, taking into account the Crab Nebula, Cassiopeia A, the remnant of Tycho's supernova, and the remnant of SN 1006.
