We propose the first deep search for the X-ray and optical counterpart of the nearby radio pulsar PSR J2144 -393 with XMM-Newton and VLT. These observations will constrain the surface temperature, emitting area and non-thermal luminosity with unprecedented sensitivity. These parameters are particularly interesting in the case of PSR J1244-3933 since its properties at radio frequencies are very peculiar and suggest the possibility that it was born as a magnetar.
