PSR J1357-6429 is a very young (7 kyr) and nearby (~2.5 kpc) energetic radio pulsar apparently associated with the supernova remnant candidate G309.8-2.6. The only existing X-ray observations of this system were obtained in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey that apparently show a bright extended source positionally coincident with the pulsar and with a candidate supernova remnant detected at radio wavelengths. We here propose a short XMM observation in order to establish the basic properties of this system. If, as expected, this is a bright X-ray source, the requested 10 ksec observation should begin to reveal spectroscopic and morphological details of the pulsar wind nebula/pulsar and form the basis for future more detailed studies.
