Consideration of the CfA sample of Seyfert galaxies reveals the suprising fact that only half the sample, well studied at most wavelengths, has been observed in the X-ray regime. It is likely these are absorbed sources, and it is important to observe these with XMM to redress our picture of low-z AGN. While much recent work has focussed on obscured AGN at high-z, obscured local sources are an important and neglected part of the luminosity function. These local sources also offer the opportunity to observe a level of detail in the X-ray spectra which is currently impossible to study in high-z sources. XMM observations of local Seyferts complement those at other wavebands & test unification schemes. These sources may also hold secrets undetectable in the more distant counterparts.
