There is now a great urgency to discover the nature of the dark matter (DM) which, along with the dark energy, comprise the foundation of the new cosmological paradigm. A2589 is an ideal target for X-ray studies of its DM because it is bright, nearby (z0.042), and has an exceptionally smooth relaxed morphology as revealed by the Chandra and ROSAT images. We propose an XMM-EPIC observation of A2589 to map the DM over 0.01-0.3r_vir. The radial DM density profile will be compared to theoretical profiles especially to address the ``core controversy'' for DM halos. We will also calculate the (1) ellipticity of the DM, (2) total gas fraction, its radial variation, and Omega_m, and (3) iron abundance profile and assess its implications for SNe enrichment using theoretical gasdynamical models.
