RXJ0648.0-4418 is a pulsating (Pspin=13.2 s) soft X-ray source in a single-component spectroscopic binary (Porb=1.55 days) containing a hydrogen depleted subdwarf O6 star, HD49798. It is currently unclear whether this compact X-ray source is a neutron star or a white dwarf. In either case HD49798/RXJ0648.0-4418 corresponds to a previously unobserved evolutionary stage of a massive binary system, after common envelope and spiral-in. We present the analysis of XMM-Newton observations taken at different phases of the binary orbit.
