We report the results of a timing analysis of X-ray observations of the bright narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy Mrk 478, obtained with the European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC) on board XMM-Newton. The source was observed on four separate occasions between 2001 December and 2003 January, with the longest observation being ≈ 32 ks. X-ray light curves of Mrk 478 in the 0.15 - 15 keV band were derived from data recorded by the EPIC PN and MOS instruments. The highest mean count rate of the combined PN and MOS light curves was 12.6 cts/s, and the highest fractional excess variability (rms) amplitude was ≈ 13 %. An average X-ray fluctuation power spectral density (PSD) covering the frequency range 2.3 x 10-4 - 0.5 Hz was calculated using 12 power spectra derived from light curves of 8192 s in duration. We find that over the 0.15 - 15 keV energy range the average PSD is well represented by a single power-law model with a slope of α ≈ 1.6. We searched for X-ray Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPOs) in our average power spectrum and did not find sufficient evidence to report a detection. However, we do show that a possible high frequency QPO near a few mHz in our average PSD is constrained to have a fractional rms amplitude < 1 %, which is
consistent with the sensitivity limitations of current observations.
