The National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) is equipped with an X-ray imaging crystal spectrometer, which records spectra of helium-like argon, ArXVII, for measurements of the ion and electron temperatures. These measurements are of particular interest for plasmas with High Harmonic Fast Wave (RF) heating, where the injection of neutral beams for diagnostic purposes would cause a significant perturbation of the plasma. Electron temperatures of 3.5 keV and ion temperatures of 2 keV were measured in recent RF heating experiments. In addition to the X-ray imaging crystal spectrometer and in support of an astrophysics project, a second high resolution X-ray crystal spectrometer is being installed at NSTX for the measurement of density-sensitive line ratios in spectra of helium- and neon-like ions in the wavelength range from 4 to 25 A, which is of special interest for the diagnostic of stellar flares. The data obtained from NSTX will be compared with astrophysical data from the Chandra X-ray observatory. This paper will present results from the x-ray imaging crystal spectrometer and give a status report of the astrophysics project at NSTX.
