We are investigating the initial stage of the explosion of the wires in the multiwire z-pinch arrays used on the Z and Saturn accelerators at Sandia National Laboratories. The Cornell X-pinch backlighting scheme(See paper by Shelkovenko, et. al), this conference. is used to obtain high temporal and spatial resolution x-ray backlighting images of wires in regimes similar to the end of the prepulse current in Z and Saturn: 2 kA or less per wire after 50 -- 100 ns or even longer with tungsten, aluminum and possibly other wires. Knowlege of the degree of expansion of the dense cores of the wires when the main current pulse of the z-pinch begins is important to understanding and modeling the subsequent dynamics of the implosion. Initial experimental results will be presented.
