Arrays of CdZnTe detectors, presently being developed in our laboratories, have considerable promise for application to future instruments for hard ( ~ 20--200 keV) X-ray astronomy. These detectors, used with large area focusing X-ray mirrors or with coded masks, will provide high sensitivity, high spacial resolution, and improved energy resolution. High sensitivity, at a level of ~ 5 micro-Crabs, about a factor of 100 better than present instruments, will allow access to perhaps 10^5 sources. A sky survey, possible with a large area, wide field coded mask, will detect and characterize about 10^4 sources at a sensitivity level of ~0.1 mCrab. Localization to the sub arc minute region will allow identification of these sources, studies of morphology and time variations, and obtain energy spectra to a resolution of E/ΔE ~ 30 at 60 keV. A wide field instrument will localize gamma-ray bursts, permitting quick response with high spacial resolution space and ground based instruments. This paper discusses recent advances in position sensitive arrays, and the results of a balloon test with such arrays carried out in October 1997.
