Cataclysmic Binaries: X-Ray Sources
Scientific paper
The authors present light curves and spectra based on X-ray and optical observations of 2 newly discovered ultra-soft X-ray sources. The sources, WGA J1047.1+6335 and WGA J1802.1+1804, were discovered during a search of the ROSAT PSPC pointed observations, data from which have been archived at HEASARC and are publicly available (White, Giommi, and Angelini 1994; Singh et al. 1995). The X-ray spectra of both the objects show an unusually strong blackbody component, about a factor of 100 with respect to the harder bremsstrahlung component, thus making their spectra look ultra-soft i.e., with ≥90% of the X-ray emission below 1 keV. Based on the optical observations and analysis of the X-ray data the authors have identified the 2 objects with new AM Her type cataclysmic variables. J1047.1+6335 has been identified with a star of V magnitude ≡19.4. It shows a period of ≡80 min in the optical continuum and circular polarization, and its optical spectrum contains strong emission lines of H and He II. The optical counterpart of J1802.1+1804 has a V magnitude of ≡14.6. It shows strong emission lines of H and He in its optical spectrum, orbital period below the period gap (113 min), and a consistent photometric, spectroscopic, and X-ray period.
