We propose to conclude an intense spectroscopic survey of a large sample of WNE stars in the SMC, the LMC and the Galaxy to determine the binary frequency of these hot WR stars of the nitrogen sequence in 3 different metal-content (Z) environments. Following up on previous data from the CTIO 4m and smaller telescopes elsewhere, we need to focus now only on the faintest objects in the LMC and the Galaxy during this last run. This will allow us to study: - The late stage of evolution of massive stars. The Roche-lobe overflow mechanism, predicted to be responsible for the formation of the bulk of WR stars and especially the H-free WNE stars in a low Z environment, is likely to be ruled out, leaving open the necessity of a new mechanism for their formation that is independent of their binary status, such as rotation. - The influence of binaries in massive populations, including starbursts. If the frequency proved to be independent of the metallicity, our results will serve as a new "standard" of the binary fraction for massive populations, at different metallicities. Furthermore, if the frequency is also proved to be low, as we now suspect, it significantly strengthen our understanding of starbursts, whose models often neglect massive binaries although they are expected to be strongly dependent on the binary fraction.
