The Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), scheduled for launch in November 2009, will conduct a digital imaging survey of the entire sky in the 3.3, 4.7, 12 and 23 micron bands. Each day during its six-month mission WISE will scan 4800 sq.deg. of the sky, and will downlink approximately 50GB of raw science imaging data and engineering telemetry. WISE will provide to the community a calibrated, digital Image Atlas covering the sky in the four WISE bands and a Source Catalog containing accurate positions and mid-infrared photometry for approximately 300 million objects. By themselves, and used in conjunction with data from other existing and planned large area surveys, these products will enable studies of asteroids, the most nearby and coolest brown dwarfs, debris disks around young stars, luminous AGB stars throughout the Milky Way, star formation in nearby galaxies, and the most luminous and distant ULIRGS and active galaxies.
The Infrared Processing and Analysis Center, California Institute of Technology is the WISE Science Data Center (WSDC) and is responsible for processing, archiving and distribution of WISE science data products. We describe the highly automated WISE Science Data (WSDS) that: 1) ingests and merges raw science data and engineering telemetry; 2) performs instrumental image calibration and detects and extracts sources from both single exposure and coadded WISE images; 3) carries out automated science data quality assessment of the processed WISE data; 4) archives and enables access to processed WISE image and tabular data products in collaboration with the NASA/IPAC Infrared Science Archive.
