Measurements were made on tracks of 100 stopping particles of known nuclear charges Z 5 to 26 in G5 emulsion in the residual range interval R between 0 and 400 micrometers. The widths were measured with a filar micrometer according to a special pattern of measurement. The mean track widths in microns were calculated as a function of residual range and nuclear charge. A comparison was made between measured and theoretical track widths. The charge resolution of the measuring technique was estimated. Within the charge groups 5 to 8, 10 to 14, and 24 to 26 the standard deviation of the charge determination amounts to 0.4, 0.8, and 1.8 units of charge, respectively, when the measurements are made on the last 100 micrometers residual range and a straightforward sum of the measured widths is used as the charge parameter.
