The earth-crossing 'asteroids' are studied as a potential source of chondritic meteorites. The total number of Apollo and Amor objects larger than 500 m in radius is estimated to be about 1200, and this estimate is used to calculate an expected mass yield of meteorites and meteoroids that is considerably higher than previously obtained values. Possible sources of both the Apollo and Amor objects are considered. It is suggested that most Apollo objects plus a large fraction of the Amor objects are probably cores of comets which have lost their volatile material by repeated solar evaporation and that some Amor objects could be derived from long-lived shallow Mars-crossing asteroids perturbed from the asteroid belt following perturbations by Mars. The distribution of the nonplanar component of angular momentum is determined for the observed Apollo objects; it is found that this distribution is remarkably nonrandom and must have some significance.
