2124 Heliopause And Solar Wind Termination

Scientific paper

A numerical model based on Parker's transport equation, including diffusive shock acceleration, is applied to the region of the heliosphere at and beyond the solar wind termination shock, with an asymmetrical geometry. Several scenarios relevant to the outer heliosphere and supported by hydrodynamic modeling are studied e.g., changing the solar wind velocity in the heliosheath in order to establish the modulation effects of additional particle acceleration in the heliosheath. Furthermore, the role of radial perpendicular diffusion at the termination shock, in particular, the role it plays in the effectiveness of the acceleration of anomalous protons and helium is studied, and the effects of changing the shock's effectiveness by making it polar angle dependent, with the main source of anomalous particles close to the equatorial regions. Combining these features may explain the observed intensities of cosmic rays in the heliosheath.
