This paper presents the results of a numerical study of the temporal evolution of space charge distributions which are assumed to be generated in response to field-aligned plasma injection from the tail plasma-sheet around local midnight. The simulation model uses two-fluid approximation, with the energetic protons executing the gradient and the westward curvature drifts in addition to the E x B drift; the spatial and temporal development of the charge filamaents is numerically followed in a plane perpendicular to the magnetic field. The results show that the gradient and the curvature drift of the positive charge carriers (energetic protons) can significantly increase the westward front-velocity of the negative charge filament and lead it poleward.
