In 1997 NASA will launch the Cassini scientific probe to the planet Saturn. Electric power for this probe will be provided by Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators thermally driven by General Purpose Heat Source modules. RTGs convert the decay heat of a radioisotope, plutonium 238, into electrical energy. The radioisotope is in the form of sintered pellets of (238)PuO2 which are encapsulated in cylindrical shells of iridium alloy to guard against release to the environment in the event of launch or re-entry accident.
