Data on the auroral zone parallel electric fields and the ring current dynamics (two distinct aspects of the interaction between waves and particles in the magnetosphere and ionosphere) are reviewed. It is shown that the available experimental evidence for the existence of such parallel electric fields is controversial. The proton dynamics of the geomagnetic storm main phase is not yet fully identified, although the main phase particle injection may be described by simplified convection theories. The importance of using multiple spacecraft missions to disclose the main phase mechanism is noted.
