The ac Langmuir probe on ESRO-1A has detected long wavelength (about 1000 km) structure in the topside ionosphere between plus or minus 60 deg latitude in the dawn and dusk local time sectors. The relationship of this structure to atmospheric gravity waves possibly generated by (1) the supersonic motion of the terminator, (2) the equatorial electrojet, or (3) energy deposited in the auroral regions during periods of magnetic disturbance, is discussed.
