Reservoir induced earthquake sequences show certain common characteristics which discriminate them from normal earthquake sequences. The Lake Oroville, California, earthquake sequence of August 1975, associated with the ML 5.7 earthquake of August 1, has been examined for these characteristics. It was observed that this sequence followed the largest lake-level fluctuation to that date; however, during 1977-1978, the lake-level fluctuations were more pronounced, but no earthquakes followed. Studies of focal depths, distribution of epicentres and other characteristics also indicate that the August 1975 events at Oroville may not be reservoir induced.
