A short pulse of intense EM radiation may excite large-amplitude wake fields (E greater than 1 GeV/m) in a magnetized electron-positron plasma and, consequently, electron or positron bunches may be accelerated to high energies. Such a mechanism exists in the pulsar magnetosphere, and its realization in the laboratory may be a promising method for the generation of high-energy accelerators.
