Rocks that border large scale diapiric intrusives contain fabric elements (e.g., crystallographic axes, xenoliths, bedding surfaces and cleavage surfaces) of different types and different orders of perfection that preserve a record of the rotation and flow history of the larger structural units within which they are contained.
The vorticity number measures the rotational character of any type of flow deformation. Since it is an instantaneous description of motion it is not always suitable in situations where unsteady boundary conditions exist, for example when micro-inclusions undergo reorientation between discrete shear surfaces in rocks with a laminar anisotropy.
A generalized equation for measuring the convective vorticity number is formulated and analyzed in terms of some naturally occurring fabrics found in low to medium grade metamorphic rocks.
