The interaction of volcanism with ice and water produces a suite of landforms with morphologies highly characteristic of their origin. They include large flood channels, distinctive mountains and ridge systems, and fields of steam explosion craters. Features similar to these in form, size and geologic setting occur on Mars and prove to be valuable indicators of the history of water on that planet.
