The problems posed by the development of a spaceborne optical stellar interferometer are considered. The general design of such an interferometer for use aboard Spacelab is described, with emphasis on a procedure for the automatic stabilization of interference fringes. An experimental study was performed to study the automatic stabilization procedure; two methods of analog signal processing in the measurement of contrast in the interferometric image are discussed.
