Morphological aspects of several Martian volcanoes, the giant volcanic shield formations of Olympus Mons and Arsia Mons and the smaller cones of Uranius Tholus and Ceraunius Tholus, are discussed. The summit of Olympus Mons is occupied by a system of calderas, and its base is bounded by a vertical scarp 4-6 km high. The presence of small impact craters indicate the relative youth of this volcano. The summit of Arsia Mons is occupied by a caldera whose inner rims are underlined by several series of concentric circular faults produced by successive collapses of the caldera floor. The bases of Uranius Tholus and Ceraunius Tholus are obscured by volcanic structures which formed after the cones. It is suggested that icy water may have helped form the ejecta blankets noted at the edges of certain meteorite craters.
