A simple model for the gravitational contraction of white dwarfs is discussed using the virial theorem. In the second part of the paper numerical calculations are reported which lead to a new mass-radius-relation for finite-temperature white dwarfs and to quantitative results concerning the contribution of different forms of energy to the luminosity.
