Viking measurements at high dayside latitudes of electric and magnetic fields are used to study large scale convection and its relation to regions of highly fluctuating fields, characteristic of the oval, and regions of high plasma density, typically associated with the cusp. The plasma density is inferred from the satellite potential which is a very useful parameter monitored by the electric field instrument. Data from more than 600 Viking orbits are used, binned according to different geophysical and interplanetary 'activity parameters', in particular different interplanetary magnetic field orientations. A subset of the data is used for exemplifying correlations between the electric and the magnetic fields, which have different interpretations depending on their phase relation.
