The instrumental performance of current VLBI relevant to astronomical observations is reviewed. Tables of all published VLBI observations of extragalactic objects from 1975 to Feb. 1981 are presented. Optical type, Miley's classification (Di or D2), and minimum and maximum observing wavelength are included. The statistics of bright sources mapped or detected by VLBI are presented, and also for size, brightness, time dependence and symmetry. The evidence from recent VLBI mapping with higher dynamic range appears to be very suggestive of a model for the stronger radio sources involving beam speeds near c. The very compact, asymmetric structures seen by VLBI can be explained by the relativistic twin jet beam model. The bright core is identified with the source of the beam, the jet-like feature with the beam itself. The curvature in compact jets is due to amplification by projection effects. Apparent superluminal motion is the kind of evidence which calls for relativistic bulk motion.
