The fine structure of the core was studied using very long baseline interferometry observations at 18 cm using Effelsberg, Dwingeloo and Jodrell Bank together with a transatlantic baseline to Green Bank. A preliminary hybrid map is shown with a restoring beam appropriate to the European baselines. Although the calibration of the data are not yet complete, the following preliminary conclusions can be drawn: (1) the steep spectrum core of 3C 236 resembles the jet-like structures seen in many sources on a much larger scale; (2) Although the overall extension of the core agrees with that of the outer lobes the existence of non-linear fine structure in the core is confirmed; (3) The bending observed in the south eastern region of the jet resembles the wiggles often seen in larger jets; and (4) There is a gradual change in position angle by 25 deg. From the eastern to the western regions of the core.
