Although corroborating optical evidence of lightning in the Venus atmosphere has not been provided by the PVO star tracker instrument, the tentative evidence from the electric field results has been accepted rather widely. However, in this paper the authors present an alternative interpretation of the plasma results. They show that prominent examples of the plasma waves that have previously been specifically attributed to lightning are associated with distinct nightside ionization troughs. They argue that the nightside troughs, like the dayside ionopause, are signatures of the close interaction of the ionosphere with the ionosheath/solar wind. Further, the authors show that the distribution of the nightside ion troughs, relative to the surface topography, is very similar to that attributed to the 100-Hz electric field disturbances and that this is most likely a coincidental result of the relationship between the PVO orbit, the planetary rotation, and the magnetic field draping geometry.
