The planetary science community has had access to the complete data set from the Magellan Venus mission for a relatively short time. Thanks to the U.S. Geological Survey efforts, we can view a nearly complete set of full resolution digital mosaics on CD ROMs. These data sets provide the synoptic and local view that allows continuing research into the global history. Some of the preliminary ideas about Venus have evolved and changed as more work is done with the Magellan data. If we consider Mars, with one-eighth the surface area of Venus, and how long it took to develop our understanding of some of the basic geological and geophysical features, we should probably not expect to have a quick consensus about the geological history of Venus. Geophysical models based on the global topography and gravity data continue to provide new insights into the processes that have shaped Venus. NASA's program of systematic geologic quadrangle mapping is providing the forum for discussion of global stratigraphy concepts and the details of regional geology that will allow global correlation of geologic units. This careful and detailed mapping will help answer some of the basic questions about the timing and sequence of volcanic and tectonic resurfacing that has affected the most recent geologic era of Venus. This paper will cover the status of some of the models that have been proposed for the geology of Venus and revisit the early debate about rapid, catastrophic resurfacing, and the nature and origin of the highlands.
