Measurements made with the Sigma-3 gas-chromatography setup led to the identification of CO2, H2S, COS, H2O, and SO2 in the Venus cloud layer. The concentration of H2SO4 aerosol was found to be much less than 1 mg/cu m at heights of 61.5-54 km over the Vega-1 landing site; at heights of 61.5-48 km, the mean concentration of H2SO4 aerosol was 1.0 + or - 0.2 mg/cu m; over the Vega-2 landing site, the concentration of H2SO4 was 0.6 + or - 0.1 mg/cu m over the Vega-2 landing site. In the absence of sulfur, the lower limit for the H2SO4 concentration is 0.4 + or - 0.1 mg/cu m.
