Palaeomagnetism: Geomagnetic Field

Scientific paper

The data on the standard deviation of the paleomagnetic directions of the sedimentary rocks, which reflects the total amplitude of the geomagnetic field variations, and on the frequency of reversals have been generalized. Smoothed curves of the field variations in the Phanerozoic with a smoothing interval of 30 million years and a step of 10 million years have been constructed. All the characteristics have similar fundamental periods: ≡100, 170, and 300 million years. Two stages of behavior of the field are distinguished: the early-mid Paleozoic and late Paleozoic-Cenozoic, which are in agreement with a readjustment of the position and nature of movement of the main continents. A positive correlation is noted between abrupt gradients in the rate of movement of the continents and extrema of variations in the direction of the field and the times when the solar system passes through branches of the galactic spiral.
