Precambrian metamorphic rocks have been collected in the Schirmacher Oasis, a part of the passive continental margin across the Princess Astrid Coast, East Antarctica. Petromagnetical, petrographical and geochemical investigation of identical sampling material was carried out. The results of petrographical studies point to a crystallization of secondary magnetic minerals connected with a hydration of mafic minerals. In this sense, retrogressive metamorphic processes are obviously in a position to change magnetic fabric parameters. Variations in selected geochemical elements are an expression of the mobilization of K-rich solutions. During such an injection, mobilized Fe may also change the magnetic properties of the rocks. The effect of metasomatic, and also retrogressive metamorphic processes, to the result of the petromagnetic fabric analysis is discussed.
