The paper presents a theoretical analysis of electron-density variations
at the maximum of the nighttime midlatitude F2-layer under the effect of
nonstationary electric field of magnetospheric origin. A typical pattern
of NmF2 variations during nighttime isolated substorms is obtained,
including the growth of NmF2 as the layer descends.
