Formulas describing the equilibrium and stability of cold configurations can be derived with ease, for both nonrotating and slowly rotating stars, via a straightforward variational approach in Newtonian theory. Average global properties of the cold configurations can be investigated analytically. Literature contributions on relativistic generalization of the variational approach, covering spherically symmetric nonrotating stars, are indicated. The relativistic approach is accurate for neutron stars with close to critical masses, and the trial functions yield the real density and pressure distributions.
